Louis Ménard (1822–1901) was a friend of Baudelaire’s; his poetry is imbued with mysticism and Hellenic philosophy.
Maurice Barrès, who wrote the preface, was profoundly influenced by his thinking: ‘I have often sought to understand the veritable scandal that is the failure of Louis Ménard. How could one of the most original minds of his time, both a painter and a poet (...) admired by Renan, Michelet, Gautier and Sainte-Beuve, have lived and died in such complete obscurity?”
