Description
[LITERATURE] Pierre LE ROY – Jean PASSERAT A Menippean Satire on the virtue of the Catholicon of Spain and on the conduct of the Estates of Paris, to which is appended a Discourse on the interpretation of the phrase ‘Higuerio del Infierno’, and who its author is. Published by the Heirs of Mathias Kerner • [Prosp. Durand] in Regensburg • [Paris] 1726 3 bound volumes, in-12°. Full sheepskin binding with root-stitching. New edition, illustrated with a frontispiece, 10 plates (numerous portraits), including 2 fold-outs (the League’s procession and the Estates of the League) and one plate within the text. Title pages in red and black. Contemporary full glazed brown calfskin binding, speckled. Spined back decorated with fleurons. Title label in red morocco leather with volume number. A fine, high-quality binding. The most complete early edition, including the additions by Prosper Marchand and Godefroy’s tables. It incorporates all earlier additions, including the Duchat edition and Verdier’s notes, etc. Among the founding contributions to the collection at the end of the 16th century, the *Catholicon* is attributed to Pierre le Roy, the verses to Jean Passerat and Pierre Rapin, and the *Harangues* to J. Gillot. This gathering of distinguished and talented scholars lends the pamphlet great literary significance and value (the *Satire* was successfully reprinted right up to the 19th century). ‘At once a comedy, a pamphlet and a coup d’état, the Satyre Ménippée paved the way for Henry IV to the throne’ (P. Larousse). The collection of texts brought together for the 18th-century editions—comprising historical, pamphleteering, satirical and literary works—constitutes the richest record of the history of the League.
