[LITERATURE]
Proust (Marcel)
Swann’s Way.
Paris: Bernard Grasset, 1914.
In-8, (2 ff.), 523 pp. Bronze-green half-chagrin. Ribbed spine (slightly sun-faded). Contemporary binding.
First edition.
FIRST ISSUE COPY, WITH PRINTING ERRORS.
- The ‘Grasset’ error: This is the most significant misprint found in press copies and the very first printed copies of the first print run, namely the typographical vertical bar ‘|’ that slipped in between the E and the T of ‘Grasset’ at the bottom of the title page. This ‘error’ was corrected very quickly during the printing process.
- The ‘printed’ stamp on page 524, on the reverse of the last page of text: The ‘printed’ stamp is still dated 8 November 1913,
- The 55 printing errors listed by Max Brun, “Contribution to the study of the first printings of the original edition of *Du côté de chez Swann*”, *Le Livre et l’Estampe*, no. 45–46, 1966, pp. 5–39
Among these, the following may be cited:
- Page 229: At the top of the page, the title reads: “Du coté de chez Wann” instead of “Du coté de chez Swann”.
- Page 403, first line: “Lizt” instead of “Liszt”.
- Page 312, line 16: “…said Swan, smiling” instead of “…said Swann, smiling”.
- Page 481, line 17: “A large photograph of St Mark’s that we had lent” instead of “that had been lent to me”.
