Description
[LITERATURE] VOLTAIRE. The League, or Henry the Great. An epic poem. Geneva. Jean Mokpap, 1723. Small 8vo. Full fawn sheepskin binding. Ribbed spine, decorated with gilt metalwork and fleurons. Slight wear to the joints. VIII and 231 pages. Scattered foxing. Minor damage to the corners. This first edition was published by Abbé Desfontaines and actually printed in Rouen by the bookseller Viret. This text, published from an incomplete manuscript comprising only 9 cantos, was reprinted by Voltaire in London in 1728 with considerable changes, under the title *La Henriade*. Pages 28 and 29, soiled.
