[PROTESTANTISM]
BRUEYS (David-Augustin de):
A History of Fanaticism in Our Time, and the Plot to Stir Up Discontent amongst the Calvinists in France.
Paris, François Muguet, 1692.
Small 12mo. Contemporary binding in worn brown sheepskin, with some losses. Ruled spine.
First edition, illustrated with a wood-engraved frontispiece.
This work is a full-scale attack on Protestants and paints a biased picture of the uprisings led by the Camisards in the Cévennes, following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
Brueys (1640–1723) was himself a former Protestant minister; converted to Catholicism by Bossuet, he became a parish priest in Montpellier.
A worn copy.
