[HISTORY]
by BURY:
History of Saint Louis, King of France, with a summary of the history of the Crusades. Volume One.
Published by Desaint, Paris, 1775.
2 volumes, In-12, xii-456 pp., and 451 pages. Frontispiece and portrait, drawn by B.L. Prevost, engraved by De Launay.
Contemporary marbled sheepskin binding, spine with decorated raised bands, title and volume number labels. Corners worn. The introduction includes a description of the allegorical frontispiece drawn by Benoit-Louis Prevost: a depiction of Saint Louis carried on a cloud, appearing to Louis XVI. The young monarch, accompanied by Prudence and Justice, takes his first steps towards the Temple of Glory; the path leading there is carved out of steep rocks and surrounded by precipices. Deceit, sensuality and envy offer a smoother path strewn with flowers, but Prudence, who exposes their schemes, and Justice, ready to punish them, cause them to retreat.
The vignette depicts a medallion portrait of Saint Louis.
The lamp base (Volume II, page 451) depicts an ancient urn containing the ashes of Saint Louis.
