[HISTORY]
A Account of the Lives and Administration of Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin, and of Monsieur Colbert. Depicted in various satires and ingenious poems; with a collection of epigrams on the life and death of Monsieur Fouquet, and on various events that took place in Paris at that time
Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1693.
In-12°. Contemporary full fawn sheepskin binding. Ribbed spine, decorated with gilt metalwork and fleurons (somewhat faded). 8 pp., 432 pages.
According to Lachèvre, this collection comprises ‘480 pieces plus 7 anagrams, mottos, etc.’, identifying twenty-five authors, including La Fontaine, Benserade, Pierre Corneille, Desmarets, Malleville, Boisrobert, Barbier d’Aucour, Le Laboureur, etc.
First edition published by a Huguenot refugee in Holland: this collection of poems and satires directed against the two cardinal ministers and their henchmen abounds in pieces that are at the very least biting, at their most ferocious, with the exception of those devoted to Fouquet, which are rather favourable. Some of them had previously been published separately and can be identified; others must have circulated only in manuscript form.
