[HISTORY] MONSTRELET (Enguerran de): The Chronicles of Enguerran de Monstrelet, a gentleman residing at Cambray in Cambresis Volume One [Two, Three] of the Chronicles Containing the cruel civil wars between the Houses of Orléans and Burgundy, the occupation of Paris and Normandy by the English, their expulsion, and other memorable events that occurred in his time in this Kingdom and in foreign lands. Paris, Pierre Mettayer, 1595. 3 tomes in 2 folio volumes of 12 unnumbered folios, 318 folios (poorly numbered as 328), 4 unnumbered folios for Tome I; 8 unnumbered folios, 205 folios (incorrectly numbered 195), 3 unnumbered folios for Volume II: 8 unnumbered folios, 130 and 124 numbered folios, 10 unnumbered folios; Volume I: Page 44, numbered 37. Page 80, numbered 81. Page 102 followed by page 113 (with no text missing) and page 114, then back to pages 105, 106, 117 and 118. Page 168, numbered 198. Volume II: Page 44, numbered 46. Page 158, numbered 159. Page 4, numbered 7. Page 24, numbered 26. Marbled sheepskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons (contemporary binding). Damage to the top and bottom edges. Split joints. A fine edition of Monstrelet’s famous chronicles. Well printed by Mettayer, it is ‘Revised and corrected against the copy from the Librairie du Roy, and enriched with an abridged version of its introduction, together with marginal annotations and very comprehensive tables’. It was in Cambrai that Monstrelet composed his chronicle, which occupies an important place in the tradition of ancient French chronicles and is particularly valuable for the numerous supporting documents it contains. A copy belonging to Paulin Paris [Signature on the title pages, Volume I and Volume II]. Paulin Paris (1800–1881), deputy curator of manuscripts at the National Library, elected a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1837, and professor at the Collège de France, where he held the chair of Medieval French Language and Literature from 1853 to 1872. He was also a member of the commission of the École des Chartes and a member of the Société des bibliophiles français.
