Description
[HISTORY] VAUBAN: Proposal for a royal tithe: which, by abolishing the taille, the aydes, customs duties between provinces, the clergy’s tithes, extraordinary levies; and all other onerous and compulsory taxes: and by reducing the price of salt by half or more, would provide the King with a certain and sufficient income, at no cost; and without placing a greater burden on one subject than another, which would increase considerably through the improved cultivation of the land. Undated, place unknown, 1707. In-12. Modern imitation binding in speckled sheepskin. Gilt metal bands on the spine. XII + 268 pp., 4 fold-out tables. One of the six in-12 editions published in the same year as the original in-4 edition; this copy bears a globe mark on the title page. It is known that the original edition, published anonymously, was seized and destroyed by Louis XIV. Vauban’s bold proposal for a royal tithe consisted of replacing all existing taxes with a single levy paid by everyone, including the nobility and the clergy, in proportion to their means.
