A brilliant general and friend of Napoleon, Marmont, Duke of Ragusa, deserted the Emperor and, from 1814 onwards, rallied to Louis XVIII. He was reproached for this throughout his life, to the extent that the neologism ‘raguser’ – meaning ‘to betray’ – was even coined.
