Poetic works, published with a preface and notes by Prosper Blanchemain.
Paris. Librairie des Bibliophiles, 1878.
Small 8vo. Half-bound with bronze-green morocco corners. Binding unsigned, but beautifully crafted. Gilded title.
A print run of 350 numbered copies. 1 of 15 copies on China paper (No. 10).
A very complete copy of the “Brief discourse on how the excellence of women surpasses that of men, as entertaining as it is full of fine examples”.
Almost nothing is known about Marie de Romieu, save that she was not of noble birth, that she was the younger sister of Jacques de Romieu, another 16th-century writer, and that in 1572 she published an adaptation of a work by Alessandro Piccolomini, *Instruction for Young Ladies*, followed in 1581 by her own poetic works. These include several sonnets, laments and elegies, as well as a delightful piece of verse, *Discourse on How the Excellence of Women Surpasses That of Men*, which was feminist before its time.
