Description
[MEDICINE] d'AUVERGNE (Anne Marie): Secrets concerning medicine. Paris. Published by Michel Vaugon and Pierre Prome, 1668. In-12°. Full contemporary binding in ivory-coloured vellum. Smooth spine. The vellum covering the book’s boards is slightly creased. 6 pp., 280 pp. and 8 unnumbered pp. for the tables. This modest volume, comprising just two hundred and eighty pages of text, was published anonymously by Michel Vaugon and Pierre Promé in Paris. The author’s name, Mademoiselle d’Auvergne, did not, in fact, appear until the second edition, published by the same booksellers. The date given on the title page, 1668, does not correspond to that of the ‘printed’, 16 April 1678. References to other published books, noted in the preface, show that the work actually appeared in 1678 and that it is the title page that is in error. Included is: HIPPOCRATE: Pronostics and Prorheta of Hippocrates, in Latin and French. New translation by E. Pariset. Paris. Published by Méquigon Marvis, 1817. 2 volumes, 12° format. Full red morocco binding, coarse-grained. Smooth spine, decorated with gilt metal tools and gilt fillets. Covers edged with a gilt frieze. Gilt edges. In fine condition.
