Description
[MEDICINE] (ROSEEN) The Mountain Doctor, or A Guide for Country Practitioners and Charitable People Dedicated to Helping the Sick: New Medicine and Surgery for the Poor. Translated from the Swedish by Roseen, by Mr C., a doctor; preceded by an introduction by P.V., a doctor at the Faculty of Montpellier. Lyon, published by the Périsse Brothers, Year 12–1803. In-12, frontispiece, (4), 8, LVIII, (2), 345, 11 pp., contemporary marbled sheepskin, ribbed spine, decorated with gilt metalwork and fleurons. First French edition. The frontispiece and title page are reproduced in the Waller Library catalogue. Hans Sallander, editor of this famous catalogue, notes: “The portrait signed ‘Roseen, Swedish physician’ depicts the well-known Swiss quack Michael Schuppach”. Whilst the attribution to Rosen of Rosenstein seems doubtful, there is, on the other hand, no evidence to suggest that this work is the product of a charlatan. The value of this work appears to be no less, far from it, than that of the popular medical books written by doctors of the time. For the treatment of scurvy, it recommends fruit (oranges, etc.) and vegetables (spinach, watercress, etc.). At the end of the book there is a ‘table of medicines recognised by observation as the most useful in medicine, and indispensable in the pharmacy and garden of country practitioners’.
