Description
[GASTRONOMY] BERTALL: The Vineyard. A Journey through the Wines of France. A physiological, anecdotal, historical, humorous and even scientific study. Paris, Plon, 1878. In-4°. Half-bound with brown shagreen corners. Ribbed spine. Gilded head. Covers preserved. The upper 2 cm of the second cover’s edge is broken. Binding slightly loose. [2] unnumbered folios, 659 pp., with a frontispiece and a large number of engraved vignettes within the text, including 94 full-page, numbered illustrations. The author and illustrator of this fine book is the draughtsman, caricaturist and photographer Bertall, whose real name was Alert Arnoux (1820–1882). He took his pseudonym from Balzac himself, whose works he illustrated. The witty caricaturist surveys the various vintages of Burgundy, the Gironde and Champagne and recounts, with great humour, a host of amusing anecdotes about wines, vineyards, winegrowers, wine owners and wine tasters. In fine condition.
