Description
[ANTIQUE BOOKS]
Jean-Baptiste RENOULT:
The Adventures of the Madonna and St Francis of Assisi. Compiled from various works by the Roman Doctors; written in an entertaining style; whilst at the same time capable of highlighting the absurdity of Papism without any controversy.
Amsterdam, Nicolas Chevalier & Jacques Tirel, 1701.
In-12°. Modern full fawn calfskin binding. Ribbed spine, decorated with gilt metal tools. Triple border of gilt fillets on the covers. Gilded edges. Weaknesses at the joints of the front cover.
Binding signed CLOSS [A Parisian bookbinder who practised from 1838 until around 1870. Devauchelle wrote of him: ‘This excellent bookbinder, all too little known’.]
Frontispiece–[18]–133–[2] pp. Complete first edition including all 10 free-standing plates, notably the plate on page 50.
The plates are unsigned, and only the first bears the inscription ‘La Feuille excud.’ The publisher is therefore Daniel La Feuille, whose heirs would produce another edition with the same engravings in 1745. These engravings are very much in the style of Romeyn de Hooghe (1645–1708).
The 10 illustrations appear as a frontispiece and at the beginning of the first nine chapters. The 10th chapter has no engraving and contains only a few reflections by the author.
Lenglet du Fresnoy had this to say: “The author, formerly a Franciscan friar, later served as a minister in London: this book, filled with indecent material, is condemned even by discerning Protestants” (Bibliothèque des Romans, 1734. II, 266).
