Description
[Félicien ROPS] A collection of articles and documents on the artist Félicien Rops (1833–1898). The magazine *La Plume*, issue no. 172, 15 June 1896. This magazine, presented in a soft full calfskin binding, is enriched with numerous documents mounted on tabs. Items added to this copy: 1° – Félicien Rops’s calling card, with a few lines written in his own hand, addressed to his “Dear old Bertrand”. 2° - Invitation card for the exhibition of Rops’ works. Original etching, featuring a reproduction of a drawing by Rops. “Salon de la Plume, 31 rue Bonaparte, Paris. Exhibition of the works of Félicien Rops. Opening night. Invitation for two people, 1896” This exhibition did not ultimately take place, due to a dispute between the artist and the editor of the magazine “La Plume”. All the invitations were destroyed. 3° – Colour soft-varnish frontispiece by Charreyre. 4° – Proof of the lithograph “La peine de mort”, placed opposite the reproduction that appeared in “La Plume”. 5° – Colour etching “Les exercices de la Dévotion de Monsieur Henri Roch”. Pre-print proof on Japanese paper. 6° – Etching “Frontispiece for *Le Parnasse satirique*”. Pre-print proof on fly-chine paper. 7° - All the covers of the various instalments containing the study on Rops, published by the magazine *La Plume*. 8° - Three reproductions of Rops’s lithographic work: “Le coffret” – “Un café au Ridych” – “L’Attrapade”. 9° – Félicien Rops as told through his private letters (article cut out from the newspaper “L’Eclair”). 10° – Etching on China paper: “Joyeusetés galantes du vicomte de la braguette”. 11° – Copy of the programme for the “Nouveau Cirque”, containing one of Rops’s earliest drawings. This is not mentioned in his monograph. 12° - Study on Rops, by Haraucourt (newspaper clipping). 13° - Illustrated catalogue of a sale from the Haraucourt collection, 16 February 1912: Engraved work by Félicien Rops. A rare catalogue, as this sale was cancelled by order of the Public Prosecutor’s Office on grounds of obscenity. 9° - Félicien Rops as revealed through his private letters (newspaper clipping from “L’Eclair”).
