The *Abrégé d’histoire naturelle pour l’instruction de la jeunesse* is modelled on a German work, *Naturgeschichte der Kinder*, published in 1783 in Göttingen by Georg Christian Raff (1748–1788), professor of history and geography. The aim of making the work accessible to a wider audience is therefore twofold: it is both to enable the work to reach a different readership—this time a French-speaking one—and to make natural history accessible to children. The success enjoyed by the German work, whose reputation had spread beyond national borders, extended equally to the French version, published jointly in Strasbourg by Amand Koenig and in Paris by Barrois the Younger in 1786, and subsequently in Amsterdam by Gabriel Dufour in 1793.
