Description
[BOUND WITH THE COAT OF ARMS OF KING LOUIS XVI]
Royal Almanac, 1777. First presented to His Majesty in 1699 by Laurent d’Houry, the publisher’s grandfather
Paris, d’Houry, n.d.
8vo, 647 pp., Full marbled light-coloured calfskin binding, spine ribbed with fleurs-de-lis, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Triple gilt fillet around the edge of each cover. Gilded fleurs-de-lis at the corners of each cover.
The official court yearbook of the 18th century. This almanac was published from 1700 to 1792 by Laurent d’Houry and his successive heirs by express authorisation of Louis XIV. “From the sort of calendar it originally was—contenting itself with a ‘general discourse on changes in the weather and other events of the year’ and a few more or less banal political predictions— the Almanac became a veritable official yearbook, having no further need for ‘discourses’ or ‘predictions’ (Grand-Carteret). In addition to the indispensable calendar, this volume notably includes dates of birth and marriages, a list of members of the clergy, officials of the Royal Households, army officers, political figures (Members of Parliament, Councillors of State, farmers-general), and members of orders of chivalry; a list of libraries, members of the Academies, royal surgeons and apothecaries, and the most important fairs; the departure times of the postal and passenger services, etc...
