Description
[BOUND WITH THE COAT OF ARMS OF KING LOUIS XVI] Royal Almanac, 1786. First presented to His Majesty in 1699 by Laurent d’Houry, the publisher’s grandfather Paris, d’Houry, n.d. 8vo, 700 pp., Full marbled blond calfskin binding, spine with fleur-de-lis raised bands, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Covers with a triple border of gilt edging. In each corner, a fleur-de-lis in a spandrel. In the centre of each cover, the crowned coat of arms of King Louis XV. A small crack at the top of the first cover’s spine. The official court yearbook of the 18th century. This almanac was published from 1700 to 1792 by Laurent d’Houry and his successive heirs by express authorisation of Louis XIV. “From the sort of calendar it originally was—contenting itself with a ‘general discourse on changes in the weather and other events of the year’ and a few more or less banal political predictions— the Almanac became a veritable official yearbook, having no further need for ‘discourses’ or ‘predictions’ (Grand-Carteret). In addition to the indispensable calendar, this work notably includes dates of birth and marriages, a list of members of the clergy, officials of the Royal Households, army officers, political figures (Members of Parliament, Councillors of State, farmers-general), and members of orders of chivalry; a list of libraries, members of the Academies, royal surgeons and apothecaries, and the most important fairs; the departure times of the postal and passenger services, etc...
