[FLANDERS] Corneille MARTIN: The genealogies and ancient lineages of the Forestiers and Counts of Flanders, with brief descriptions of their lives and deeds. All compiled from the most reliable, authenticated and ancient chronicles and annals found by Corneille Martin, Zelandoys, and adorned with portraits, figures and costumes, in accordance with the fashions and customs of their times, as they were discovered by Pierre Balthasar and brought to light by himself. Antwerp: Published by Pierre Balthasar, undated [1578–1580]. In folio. Brown half-shagreen binding, with corners, ribbed spine decorated with gilt metal fittings (19th-century binding). 4 unnumbered folios, 119 pages. This volume contains a frontispiece, the coat of arms or insignia of Archduke Matthias, a map of Flanders, 40 full-length portraits of the Counts of Flanders, and a full-page allegorical figure depicting Death, accompanied by verses by Ch. de Navières. Pierre Balthazar, a painter and etcher, practised in Antwerp. He produced the first portraits of the Dukes of Brabant, the Princes of Holland and the Counts of Flanders. First edition, rare. Ryckebusch bookplate on the flyleaf.
