Description
[VAUCLUSE]. [ENTRAIGUES-SUR-LA-SORGUE]
Duties owed to Gononius (Gonin?) Challan (or Challain) for his lands in the Entraigues-sur-la-Sorgue area
In Latin, deed on parchment, two sewn-together leaves, cursive script in brown ink
Southern France, Entraigues-sur-la-Sorgue? [locum de Interaquis], deed dated 13 March 1461
Document drawn up and signed by the notary Johannes Girardi (Girard)
Upper section fragile with gaps and holes in the parchment; a tear along the side.
Dimensions: 215 x 1010 mm (rolled document).
Among the names mentioned of those making declarations are Antoine de Roynac and Antoinette de Roynac (de Roynhaco), no doubt a noble associated with the seigneury of Roynac (Drôme Provençale), as well as Jacques, Simon and Jean, and Catherine Rigordi or Rigordy, members of an ancient Provençal family.
Noting the localities mentioned in this document, for example ‘Malo Passeto ’ (Malpasset or Malpassé, between Pernes-les-Fontaines and Mazan, Vaucluse? or ‘in loco Fayssa’, which could correspond to the locality known as Les Faysses, near Sorgues (Vaucluse)?), it should be possible to identify the lands in question more precisely.
Source: Pierre Champion Collection (1880–1942), with his name written in ink on the back of the document. A historian and politician, Pierre Champion was born at 15 Quai Malaquais, the same address once occupied by the bookshop of Noël France, father of Anatole France. The son of Honoré Champion, who instilled in him a passion for books and history from an early age, he enrolled at the École des Chartes (qualifying as an archivist and palaeographer in 1905). He took over the compilation of Auguste Lesouëf’s catalogue; he married Lesouëf’s niece, Madeleine Smith, an artist and pupil of Jean-Jacques Henner (hence the Smith-Lesouëf collection). Trained at the École des Chartes, he attached great importance to archives, and this piece in his collection bears witness to that.
