Description
[AUTOGRAPH] Alphonse DAUDET: Signed letter from Alphonse Daudet to Edouard Cottinet, June 1881. In-12° page. Small stain on a marginal part of the letter. “Dear friend, And do not be misled by my gloomy appearance – black or white, but never grey – it is simply that I am short-sighted, infirm, and have a squint; and if only you knew the hesitation, shyness and awkwardness that this causes… Enclosed: [SIEGE OF PARIS, WAR OF 1870] 3 documents, with printed header: Ministry of the Interior, General Directorate of Telegraph Lines: - A handwritten page in 8° format, dated 20 January 1870, signed [illegible]. “From the Admiral, Commander-in-Chief of the 9th Sector, to the Mayor of Paris, I note that certain bakeries on the Boulevard d’Italie, 13th arrondissement, are not open at 8.30 am. The crowd, however, has been queuing since 3.15 am: they are fairly calm, but it would be prudent to urge the bakers to be punctual.” - One page, 8° format, handwritten, dated 19 January 1871. General Schmitz [Chief of Staff of the Military Government of Paris, under the command of General Trochu], to His Excellency the Minister of War, Paris. You have received the Governor’s dispatch. My advice is to send all available artillery to the Genevilliers peninsula. Is this your view? [The following comment in red pencil follows]: Received the Governor’s dispatch at 10.10 am. Has a request been made? I do not see what connection the artillery at Genevilliers could have with the dispatch. Take no action until further explanation is provided. - One page, 8° format, handwritten, dated 29 January 1871. “Commander Noisy to General Vinoy, at the Louvre. Since yesterday, all our wires have been cut flush with the torpedoes; any danger of explosion has therefore been ruled out. I nevertheless believe it necessary to warn the new occupant that the perimeter of the fort is mined, in case his own investigations should lead him to discover our mine chambers. For a copy, signed illegibly.”
