Description
[COUSIN D’AVALLON (Charles-Yves)]. The Story of Toussaint-Louverture, leader of the Black insurgents of Saint-Domingue; Preceded by a political overview of this colony, and followed by anecdotes and specific accounts concerning this leader of the Black people, and the agents of the Directory sent to this part of the New World during the course of the revolution. Paris: Pillot frères, Year X–1802. — In-12, 167 x 97: portrait, (2 ff.), 211 pp. Rooted sheepskin, smooth decorated spine, mottled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of one of the earliest works devoted to Toussaint Louverture (1743–1803), the Franco-Haitian revolutionary general. Published in 1802, one year before his death on 7 April 1803 at Fort de Joux, this book helped to forge his legend in Europe, at a time when the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804) was upending the colonial order and inspiring abolitionist movements. The edition is illustrated with a portrait of the general on the frontispiece, one of the earliest known depictions of this great figure. Skillfully restored binding. Scattered foxing, stains on several leaves including the title page. Restoration on one leaf (pp. 125–126) with damage to the text. Corner loss on the penultimate leaf, without damage to the text.
