The Revolt of the Blacks… Paris: Tiger, [c. 1820]. — 2 works in one in-18 volume, 125 x 78: frontispiece, 108 pp.; frontispiece, 107 pp. Fawn half-calf, smooth spine with decoration (Ateliers Laurenchet). A collection of two rare anonymous works on the Haitian War of Independence, or the War of Saint-Domingue, the first successful slave revolt of the modern world. The first work was published in 1820, as announced in the *Bibliographie de la France* of 26 February 1820. It is a detailed historical account of the Haitian Revolution from 1789 until the proclamation of the abolition of slavery in Saint-Domingue by Léger-Félicité Sonthonax on 29 August 1793. It is illustrated with a fold-out plate as a frontispiece, captioned: ‘The Burning of Le Cap’ and ‘General Revolt of the Blacks. Massacre of the Whites’. The second volume was also published in 1820, as announced in the *Bibliographie de la France* of 24 June 1820, and not in 1803 as some sources indicate. It contains the continuation of the previous account from 1794 to 1814, covering the rule of Alexandre Pétion, the first president of the Republic of Haiti, and including Haiti’s independence in 1804. At the end of the volume are the official documents: Constitutional Act of Haiti (sic). – Constitutional Law of the Council of State, for the establishment of the monarchy in Haiti. – Almanac of Haiti for the year 1814. The edition also includes a fold-out frontispiece, captioned: ‘Landing of the French Fleet at Saint-Domingue. War to the death between the French and the Blacks. Horrific carnage, fires, devastation; the French driven out of Saint-Domingue.’ A fine copy, bound in the Laurenchet workshops. A few scattered foxing spots.
