First edition of this compilation of the greatest ancient and modern travel accounts from Asia and Africa, printed in two columns and published by Jean-Baptiste Eyriès (1767–1846), co-founder of the Geographical Society in 1821. It includes, in particular, the travel accounts of Erman, Lesseps, Pallas, Turner, Tavernier, Chardin, Tournefort, Volney and many others.
The second part is entirely devoted to travels in Africa and covers a wide range of regions: Egypt, Nubia, Abyssinia, the coasts of Ajan and Zanzibar, Mozambique, the Comoros and Seychelles, Madagascar, Bourbon Island, Mauritius, Cape Colony, the Cape of Good Hope, Congo, the islands of Saint Helena and Ascension, Guinea, Senegambia, the Cape Verde Islands, the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, the Sahara, Sudan, the Oases, Barca and Tripoli, Tunis, Algeria, and the Kingdom of Morocco.
A richly illustrated edition, comprising two fold-out maps (one for Asia, the other for Africa) and 137 plates, the majority of which comprise several steel engravings based on drawings by Jules Boilly, including the frontispiece depicting four explorers: Chardin, Pallas, Burckhardt and Lander.
