Description
HUGO (Victor). Bug-Jargal. [Paris: Eugène Hugues, 1888]. — Large 8vo, 281 x 190: (6 blank folios at the beginning), 168 pp., illustrated cover. Light brown shagreen, cold-stamped framed design on the covers, decorated ribbed spine, double gilt fillet and gilt corner fleur-de-lis on the inside, gilt headband, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (René Kieffer). A fine edition forming part of the complete works of Victor Hugo published by Eugène Hugues between 1876 and 1897. It is illustrated with 28 wood-engraved plates, including one full-page plate after Célestin Nanteuil, the others appearing in the text after drawings by Édouard Riou and Ludovic Mouchot. One of 50 numbered copies on Chinese paper (no. 15), later bound by René Kieffer. Spine faded, some normal wear and tear. Scattered foxing.
