Description
VERNE (Jules). Five Weeks in a Balloon. A Journey of Discovery in Africa by Three Englishmen. Paris: Bibliothèque d’éducation et de récréation, J. Hetzel, 1867. — 8vo, 265 x 178: (2 ff.), 267 pp. Publisher’s cardboard binding in old rose percaline ‘with bouquets of roses of the second type’, known as ‘star-sprinkled’, with comb endpapers. New edition illustrated with 79 plates instead of the 51 in the small 8vo edition. A rare copy bound in the second edition’s cardboard binding produced for this title, featuring ‘bouquets of roses’ and a ‘spangled spine’. The back cover ‘features rich blind-stamped ornamentation with a central rosette appearing in a window at each of the four corners, which are themselves ornamented, and which is in turn enclosed by a blind-stamped border’ (Jauzac, p. 14). This binding had a short-lived existence. This title, along with the first illustrated edition of *Journey to the Centre of the Earth*, are the only ones to have been bound in it. A copy free from restoration, from the collection of Éric Weissenberg (1941–2012) (see lot no. 77). Normal wear and tear; spine slightly thinned. Inner hinges split. Waterstains. Provenance: Éric Weissenberg, with bookplate (auction 4 October 2018, lot no. 197).
