Description
VERNE (Jules). Around the World in Eighty Days. Illustrations by Messrs de Neuville and L. Benett. Paris: Bibliothèque d’éducation et de récréation, J. Hetzel et Cie, [1874]. — In-8, 268 x 177. Dark blue percaline cloth binding ‘with bouquets of roses’, gilt edges (Ch. Magnier). First large 8vo illustrated edition of one of Jules Verne’s most famous novels, chronicling the adventures of Phileas Fogg and his valet Jean Passepartout. In this story, Africa is merely a stopover. The two travellers pass through Suez aboard the steamship Mongolia, and it is on this occasion that Passepartout exclaims, astonished: ‘In Africa! I can’t believe it.’ A fine copy in the first hardback binding designed for this title, ‘with bouquets of roses and medallions with black circles’. A splendid copy, from the collection of Éric Weissenberg (1941–2012) (see lot no. 77). Skillful restoration to the binding. Foxing. Provenance: Éric Weissenberg, with bookplate (sold 19/03/2019, lot no. 99).
