Havana-coloured percaline board binding ‘in the style of the Ptolemaic armillary sphere’, gilt edges (Engel). First edition, illustrated with drawings by Léon Benett, several facsimiles and 21 maps. This is the first volume of the trilogy *History of Great Journeys and Great Travellers*, devoted to explorations from antiquity to the 17th century. Several passages deal with Africa, but an entire chapter is devoted to the Moroccan explorer Ibn Battûta (1304–1369). A copy in its original cardboard binding, ‘with the Ptolemaic armillary sphere’. Catalogue S (1878–1879), bound at the end. Back cover of the ‘Engel b’ type. Minor wear to the caps and corners. Provenance: Dr and Mrs Camplez, with bookplate.
