First illustrated edition of this adventure novel, which focuses primarily on the issue of slavery and, more specifically, on the trade in African slaves by other Africans.
A copy in the first hardback binding designed for this title, the ‘two elephants’ Type 1 binding, featuring the ‘Lenègre b’ front cover, the inscription ‘J. Hetzel éditeur’ on the spine and the 1878 S catalogue.
The copy is very well preserved, though the endpapers have been replaced.
