Description
APOLLINAIRE (Guillaume) – FÉRAT (Serge). Les Mamelles de Tirésias. A surrealist drama in two acts and a prologue. With music by Germaine Albert-Birot. Paris: SIC, 1918. — In-8, 192 x 143: 108 pp., (2 blank folios at the beginning), printed cover. Dark blue half-maroquin with bands, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (D. H. Mercher). First edition of this play, first performed on 24 June 1917 at 10–12 Rue de l’Orient in Paris. Apollinaire makes this point at the beginning of his preface: ‘Without asking for leniency, I would point out that this is an early work, for apart from the Prologue and the final scene of the second act, which date from 1916, this play was written in 1903, that is to say, fourteen years before it was first performed”. The action takes place in Zanzibar. The edition is illustrated with seven drawings by the painter Serge FÉRAT (1881–1958), reproduced as full-page plates, one of which is repeated on the cover. A copy on standard paper. Only 17 copies were printed on large-format paper. A fine binding by Daniel-Henri Mercher. The cover is browned.
