First edition of this essay by the poet and adventurer Alain Gheerbrant (1920–2013), which examines the West’s ability to re-establish dialogue with others. Through encounters with Africans and Europeans, he denounces a Western culture in crisis whilst celebrating the richness of others—particularly Black people—who have managed to preserve their integrity.
The edition is illustrated with 8 photographs by Dominique Darbois and Alain Gheerbrant, appearing separately from the text.
One of 58 copies printed on Lafuma-Navarre pure-fibre vellum, the only edition printed on large-format paper, this copy being one of the eight not for sale.
Spine faded.
Enclosed is another copy, in paperback, from the press run, featuring a handwritten dedication signed by the author, addressed to the journalist and man of letters Étienne Lalou.
