Description
MARAN (René) – IACOVLEFF (Alexandre). Batouala. Paris: Éditions Mornay, 1928. — In-4, 255 x 187: frontispiece, (6 leaves, the first 2 blank), VII, 169 pp., (3 blank leaves), 5 plates, illustrated cover. Fawn half-chagrin with bands, gilt fillets, spine with a broad central rib, decorated with medallions and a mosaic-style profile face, gilt edges on marbled paper, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Alvarez de Toledo). An edition ‘completely revised and partly original’, constituting the definitive edition of the text. It is illustrated with 52 plates within the text and 6 separate etchings, by Alexandre IACOVLEFF (1887–1938), who knew Africa well, having taken part in the Citroën Central Africa expedition in 1924–1925. One of the first 15 copies printed on antique Japanese paper, this one being one of five non-commercial copies, specially printed for René Maran (no. III). A fine copy. The spine is slightly faded and there are a few stains on the covers. One edge of the slipcase is damaged.
