Description
MARINETTI (Filippo Tommaso). The African Poem of the ‘28 October’ Division. Milan: A. Mondadori, [1937]. — In-8, 192 x 125: 319 pp., printed cover. Paperback. First edition, printed on 15 February 1937; no large-format edition was published. *Il Poema africano della divisione ‘28 ottobre’* ’ is a Futurist poem inspired by Marinetti’s experiences during the Ethiopian War of 1935, where he served in the ‘28 October’ Division under the command of General Umberto Somma. For Marinetti, this work marks ‘the definitive victory of free words over traditional free verse, which is syntactic, logical and bound by rigid punctuation’. An autobiographical account, the poem evokes, in particular, the Battle of Passo Uarieu, one of the most gruelling of the conflict. The work, dedicated ‘to the Futurist volunteers of the swift war’, is structured into 60 ‘simultaneities’, preceded by a long preface. A copy belonging to the Belgian journalist and writer Robert Leurquin, featuring this autograph dedication signed by the author on the second blank page: to Robert // Leurquin // with my // warmest regards // T. M. Marinetti A very well-preserved copy.
