First edition, dedicated to Paul Eluard, of this collection of surrealist poems by Gui Rosey (1896–1981).
The work does not deal directly with Africa in a realistic sense, but uses it as a symbol of freedom, rebellion and the transcending of boundaries. The edition is illustrated with a drawing by Yves TANGUY, reproduced as a frontispiece.
One of 485 copies printed on white bouffant paper (no. 21).
A copy belonging to Max Ernst (1891–1976), bearing this autograph dedication signed by the author on the first blank page:

The copy subsequently entered the collection of the painter, sculptor and visual artist Arman (1928–2005).
