Description
SAINT-JOHN PERSE.
…A thousand brides’ heads…
Place of publication not stated: ADdA, [1987]. — Oblong 8vo, 150 x 210: (8 leaves, the first 2 and last 2 blank), printed cover. Unbound, with a pasted-on cover.
Artist’s book printed in an edition of 30 copies on vellum paper, illustrated with an original, unsigned, colour engraving by Philippe GAROUSTE DE CLAUZADE (1922–2017), printed separately from the text. The text features a very short extract from *Amers* by Saint-John Perse.
Perse travelled to and lived in Africa on several occasions during his diplomatic career. His stays in Angola, Congo-Brazzaville, the Niger Delta and Gabon left a lasting impression on his imagination. Although *Amers* centres on the maritime theme, his African experience shines through in images of sand, dunes and deserts.
Each copy bears the artist’s signature on the colophon. This copy is numbered 4; it is enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by Garouste on the first page:
To Claude Mozis // in the spirit of a // fine friendship // at Bazemont / 25 Sept 87 // Garouste
A very well-preserved copy despite some minor foxing in the margins.
