Description
SALMON (André). L’Amant des Amazones. Paris: La Banderole, [1921]. — In-8, 210 x 163: 149 pp., (5 ff., the last two blank), printed cover. Purple morocco; spine and inner edge of the covers covered with a broad mosaic decoration in brown and green morocco, depicting a palm branch, plain spine, violet morocco framing on the inside, with the decoration from the covers extending onto two edges, linings and endpapers in green moiré silk, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, edged slipcase (G. Schrœder). First edition illustrated with 15 colour woodcuts by Jean Gabriel DARAGNÈS (1886–1950). This novel follows the adventures of Holivel, a cosmopolitan traveller, who recounts his journeys and encounters, often tinged with irony and cynicism. The narrative notably depicts expeditions to the tropics, where colonial exploitation, human cruelty and disillusionment intertwine. André Salmon approaches colonialism with a critical and disillusioned eye, primarily through two lenses: the condemnation of colonial atrocities and the hypocrisy of the ‘civilised’. A rare copy, the only one printed on old Japanese paper, reserved for the artist. Bound for Daragnès by Germaine Schrœder (1889–1983), it comprises: - all the artist’s original drawings, with some illustrations comprising several studies, - a series of 3 or 4 woodcut states on Chinese paper and Japanese paper, in black and in colour, - 11 pages of autograph manuscripts by André Salmon (in-8), including the complete Chapter V of the book. Spine worn. Foxing on some of the prints in the series on Chinese paper. Provenance: Jean Gabriel Daragnès, with his bookplate. - Henri Bonnasse, with bookplate.
