SENGHOR (Léopold Sédar) – MASSON (André). Songs of Shadow. [Geneva]: Éditions Regard, [1976]. — Folio, 434 x 330: (2 blank folios), 85 pp., (5 folios, the last 2 blank), printed cover. Loose-leaf, reinforced cover, publisher’s slipcase decorated on the front cover with an original print by André Masson, protected by a transparent Plexiglas plate. A fine edition of this collection of poetry, first published in 1945, exploring the themes of African identity, colonisation and the quest for freedom. It is illustrated with 10 original copperplate engravings by André MASSON (1896–1987), printed full-page and signed by the artist, as well as, on the slipcase, an original print signed by Masson, executed using sand from Senegal, sourced from Joal and M’Boro. Limited edition of 190 copies on Arches vellum, plus a few copies for contributors, signed by the author and the artist on the margin. This copy is one of the 125 numbered from 36 to 160 (no. 112). The copy is in very good condition despite a tear on one edge of the slipcase.
