Dark blue Jansenist morocco, smooth spine, linings and endpapers of yellow paper sprinkled with gold, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (contemporary binding). First edition of this philosophical and initiatory novel. Michel Tournier tells the story of Idriss, a young Berber, who decides to leave his oasis after a stolen photograph shatters his innocence. His journey to France confronts him with the exploitation and illusions of the West. He loses his drop of gold, a symbol of purity, but rediscovers his soul through music and calligraphy. The novel ends when he smashes a shop window to retrieve his golden drop, an act of rebellion and rebirth. One of the first 55 copies printed on white laid paper by Holland Van Gelder (no. 42).
