Description
REVUE FANTAISISTE. Paris, Published by the Revue, 1861. 3 volumes in 8, paperback with printed cover, minor wear and tear. Minor defects and wear to the covers and paper edges. Untrimmed. Foxing throughout the volume. Slight water stain at the top of volume 3, not serious. Title pages coming loose.
A very rare collection of the first 18 instalments (the 19th and final instalment of 15 November 1861 is missing) of this journal, published in 19 instalments between 15 February and 15 November 1861.
The journal brought together, under the leadership of its founder Catulle Mendès, various authors and columnists such as Théodore de Banville, Alphonse Daudet, Charles Asselineau, Gabriel Guillemot, Hippolyte Babou, Alcide Dusolier, Charles Monselet, Villiers de L’Isle-Adam, Théophile Gautier, Champfleury, and others.
It notably features nine previously unpublished poems by Baudelaire (‘Le Crépuscule du soir’, ‘La Solitude’, ‘Les Projets’, ‘L’Horloge’, ‘La Chevelure’, ‘L’Invitation au voyage’, ‘Les Foules’, Les Veuves, and Le Vieux saltimbanque), his *Réflexions sur quelques-uns de mes contemporains* (Victor Hugo, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Auguste Barbier, Théophile Gautier, Petrus Borel, Gustave Levavasseur, Théodore de Banville, Pierre Dupont and Leconte de Lisle), as well as one of his articles on art (Eugène Delacroix’s murals). From 1 May 1861, the issues will be accompanied by remarkable original engravings (14 in total) by Rodolphe Bresdin (an artist immortalised in 1847 by Champfleury in his short story ‘Chien-Caillou’)
Unfortunately, the engravings are missing from our copy.
The covers, which show minor soiling and wear, are reused; the issue numbers and volume numbers are concealed by a small piece of paper of the same type as the cover.
