Note: Guy Yves JACQUET, born in Azay-le-Rideau on 17 October 1931 and died in Paris on 9 January 1991, was a theatre director, a learned actor and a great enthusiast of Arab culture. As part of three exhibitions: ‘Popular Imagery in the Islamic World’; “The Arab Sky” in collaboration with Hassan Massoudy; and “The 99 Miniatures of Al Wassity”; the works from the Jacquet collection offered for sale today are the final testament to a passion he nurtured throughout his life.
Guy Jacquet’s exhibition “The Arab Sky” showcases the scientific work of Arab scholars in the field of astronomy, notably through Abd al-Rahman al-Soufi’s treatise, “The Book of Fixed Stars”, published in 964. Astronomy was a discipline used not only by scholars, but also by religious figures, travellers, cartographers, provincial administrations and even the postal services. Each of them consulted astronomers to determine their routes and draw up religious calendars. In the countries of the Middle East, houses are open to the sky and their residents are in direct contact with it, particularly on warm, clear summer nights.
