MONTAIGNE. Journal of Michel de Montaigne’s journey to Italy and subsequently to Germany in 1580 & 1581, with notes by M. de Querlon. Rome and Paris: Le Jay, 1774. 3 vols., small 12th, in full contemporary binding with a smooth, decorated spine. Minor foxing and wear to several caps and corners. 1 engraved portrait as frontispiece. One of the three editions published by Le Jay in the same year. The distinctive feature of this edition is that the third volume is bilingual, with the French text on one page and the Italian text alongside it, accompanied by Bartoli’s notes. The manuscript of this posthumous work remained unpublished until 1774, when it was discovered by Abbé Prunis amongst the papers at the Château de Montaigne.
