Description
(Restif de la BRETONNE) *Les Nuits de Paris* or *The Nocturnal Spectator*. Published in London and available in Paris from the booksellers listed at the head of the catalogue, 1788. 7 vols in 12, in full marbled calf of the period, with decorated ribbed spines. Triple fillet on the covers. Minor wear and tears to the corners, caps or edges. Browned pages. Complete with the 15th part, ‘La Semaine Nocturne’. Illustrated with 17 engraved plates attributed to BINET (plate XI and the plate depicting Louis XVI on his throne), which are often missing but are all present here. ‘Le Spectateur Nocturne’, comprising the first 14 parts of these ‘Nuits de Paris’, is a magnificent portrait of pre-Revolutionary Paris. The 15th part: ‘La Semaine Nocturne’, published two years later, is a scathing account of the Revolution. This part caused Restif de la Bretonne some trouble.
