Edition illustrated with a title, a frontispiece, 8 hors-texte (including 2 for the cover) and 137 bands, vignettes and initials, all drawn and wood-engraved in colour by Louis Jou. The artist also designed the typefaces. Unique edition of 135 copies on laid paper, this one "a copy offered to Mr Anatole France". Bound in-4, full orange morocco, smooth spine, title in Chinese style in a green lozenge and two green bands across set with gilt fillets, fine silk endpapers, untrimmed, gilt head, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (M. Schlissinger 1996). One of the most sought-after of Jou's illustrated books, a "capital work" according to Carteret.
