Description
LOUŸS Pierre: Aphrodite. Mœurs antiques. Fasquelle Paris 1928. New edition, one of the ex on pur fil. Bound in burgundy bakelite signed Jotau, metal title-piece on spine, publisher's cover preserved, gilt head (Jotau). Perfect condition. Jotau (Joseph Taupin) was the first bookbinder of industrial stature; his product stems from the typical "avant-garde" processes of the 1920s. Articulated bindings in Bakelite, from the early 1920s to the mid-1930s, were one of the first attempts to renew the aesthetics of current bindings. Jean de Gonet's semi-industrial RIM bindings follow in the footsteps of these Jotau bindings.
