BRANTÔME (Pierre de Bourdeille, Lord of). Memoirs of Sir Pierre de Bourdeille, Lord of Brantôme. Containing the lives of illustrious men and great foreign commanders of his time. Leiden [The Hague], Jean Sambix the Younger [Jean and Daniel Steucker], 1666, 9 small 12mo volumes, red morocco, decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, coat of arms in the centre, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition, with the globe emblem, appended to the Elsevier collection. It brings together the various parts comprising Brantôme’s *Mémoires*: *Illustrious Men and Great Commanders of His Time* (6 volumes); The Lives of Gallant Ladies (2 volumes, the first dated 1665); Memoirs… concerning duels. Dated 1722. Copies are often compiled differently (Jean Bonna Library, 2007, no. 48; Sotheby’s, 2007, no. 13; the Longepierre copy, Drouot, 2013, no. 101). A very rare set, particularly when complete with the volume on duels, A fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Paulin Prondre de Guermantes (1650–1723). Some slight wear; the volume on duels has narrow margins.
