Description
[CHODERLOS DE LACLOS (Pierre-Ambroise-François)]. *Les Liaisons dangereuses*, or *Letters collected within a society, & published for the instruction of others*. By M. C... de L. Amsterdam, and now residing in Paris, Durand the younger, 1782, 4 parts in 2 vols. in-12, marbled fawn calf, smooth, decorated spine, title and volume number labels in red and green morocco, gilt chain framing the covers, roulette on the edges, interior lace, gilt edges, modern slipcase (contemporary binding). First edition, ‘type A’ (to use Max Brun’s classification), containing the error ‘Madame de Metteuil’ instead of Merteuil, on line 10 of page 155 of Volume I. This literary masterpiece, forgotten for almost the entire 19th century, had no fewer than 16 printings by 1782. The term ‘first edition’ is generally reserved for the first three (A, B and C in Brun’s classification). A fine copy, perfectly bound in the period style. Ex-libris F. Vandèrem. Provenance: Librairie Lardanchet, 1981. Very slight scuffing to the top edge of the second part and to two corners.
