Description
MAROLLES (Michel de). Memoirs of Michel de Marolles, Abbot of Villeloin. [Followed by]. Continuation of the Memoirs of Marolles containing twelve treatises on various curious subjects. Paris, Antoine de Sommaville, 1656–1657, 2 vols. folio, brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). A very rare set comprising both of Marolles’ works, published two years apart. The *Mémoires* had been published only in small numbers, intended ‘for relatives and friends’ (preface). Three portraits, including one as a frontispiece. The *Suitte* was not intended by the author and is rarely found together with the *Mémoires*. Moreover, the bindings are not identical: brown calfskin with a spine ribbed and decorated with grotesque motifs for the *Mémoires*, and fawn calfskin with a spine ribbed and decorated with a repeated crowned monogram for the *Suite*. Both volumes come from the Du Plessis library (along with the two bookplates). A small brown stain in the margin of the final leaves of the *Mémoires*. A very fine copy.
