Description
MONTAIGNE (Michel de). The Essays. Based on the oldest and most accurate editions: expanded to include several letters from the author, and in which the Greek, Latin and Italian passages are translated more faithfully and quoted more accurately than in any of the previous editions. With notes, and new tables of contents far more useful than those published hitherto. By Pierre Coste. A new edition, more comprehensive and accurate than the latest London edition. In Paris, by the Society, 1725, 3 vols. in-4, fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red edges (contemporary binding). One of the finest editions of the Essays, based on the reprint of Coste’s 1724 London edition, with significant additions by Gueulette and Jamet the Elder. Coste counted this edition amongst his own. Frontispiece portrait engraved by Chéreau the Younger. Some wear to the caps and corners.
