Description
SAINT-LAMBERT (Jean-François de). Philosophical Works. Paris, H. Agasse, Year IX (1801), 5 vols. in-8, speckled fawn sheepskin, plain decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). A collected edition of the philosophical writings of the Marquis de Saint-Lambert, prepared by the author himself, and whose publishing history is of rare complexity. A leading figure of the Enlightenment and author of several articles in the Encyclopédie, Jean-François de Saint-Lambert, originally from Lorraine (1716–1803), had, in succession, as his mistresses the Marquise de Boufflers, Émilie Du Châtelet and Louis d’Éinay, with whom Jean-Jacques Rousseau was madly in love. He was elected to the Académie française in 1770. A fine copy.
